8 TIPS FOR EXTENDING THE LIFE OF YOUR PROJECTOR

* Look after the projector lamp

As a replacement lamp can be over half the original price of your projector, it is wise to look after it as much as possible.
The main enemies of your lamp are dust, heat and vibration.

* Do not leave the lamp running for extended periods of time.

Although you should not repeatedly turn the projector on and off it is a good idea to turn it off before each break for morning tea or lunch.
Most compact projectors are good to run for a couple of hours but not for four or five hours non-stop. They tend to get quite hot and  excessive heat will reduce the life of the lamp and the LCD panels.

* Clean the air filters regularly

At least once per term. This needs to be monitored as some schools are finding they need cleaning monthly or in extreme cases even fortnightly. The filters (usually two) can be found on the bottom of the projector near the air intake locations.
They are easily removed using your fingernail. No special tools are required. Blow vigorously from the inside  surface to remove light coatings of dust. For heavy coatings of dust you can use a soft, dry paintbrush to gently  sweep away the dust.
Some projectors have a filter counter which can be set to remind you when to check them. This must be reset  after cleaning the filters. Refer to the owners manual for instructions on how to do this.
It is good practice to also clean the projector casing when cleaning the filters. This can be done using a soft clean paintbrush to brush any surface dust away from the projector.

* Keep away from heat sources -

Such as heaters, lights, and direct sunlight. At least 1 meter is a good rule of thumb. Test by placing your hand  next to the projector. If you can feel the heat you need to move the projector.

* Take care when moving the projector

Do not knock or bump the projector, particularly when it is still going or when it has just been turned off.

* Always allow the projector to cool down

Before switching off or removing from the power. Usually the lamp light will flash while the projector lamp is cooling down and then stop when the projector is cool enough to move. The fan will also continue running for this period.

* Allow sufficient ventilation around the projector.

Refer to the owners manual for details on recommended distances. More is required around the air intake locations. This is especially important if a cage is being used to protect the projector. Most commercially available cages have built in ventilation slots.

* Do not project a still image for a long period of time

As this can burn a permanent image onto the LCD panels.

Although projector lamps can be replaced easily by removing a  couple of screws it is a good idea to get your projector serviced at the same time. This allows the internal workings such as LCD panels  to be checked and cleaned as well, avoiding future problems.
